2020 KPAFFL Draft Results

The 2020 KPAFFL draft is in the books and as usual, there were ample surprises in the twelve team melee for supremecy. Patrick Mahomes was the first quarterback taken in the first round of the draft since 2014, and the highest drafted since Aaron Rodgers was taken second overall in 2012. A record breaking 16 running backs were taken in the first 24 picks, led by last year's RB1 Christian McCaffery as the first player off the board. Team Chopkins matched the KPAFFL record with seven WR's drafted in the 15-round event while Team Sean led the league with seven RB's taken, including last year's RB6, RB10, and RB11. The varying draft strategies were apparent as the draft unfolded, and it remains to be seen who's methodology will result in being crowned the 18th champion of the KPAFFL. With that being said, we can take an early look at who gained an edge at each position heading into the 2020 season.

Best QB Situation - Brett's Nasty Bunch

The Nasties snagged 2019's QB1, Lamar Jackson, with pick 19 in the second round. Jackson's 415.68 points in 2019 ranks second over the last five years only to Patrick Mahomes unworldly 2018 season.  The Nasties also picked up 2019's QB10, Carson Wentz, in round 11 of the draft.  Brett's Nasty Bunch was one of just four teams to draft multiple QB's, suggesting the QB waiver wire will be sizzling as the season progresses.

Worst QB Situation - Holmes Crew

It was a close race with Football Fetish, but Tom Brady finished 2019 as QB12 and is now surrounded by one of the best skill position groups in the NFL.  Holmes Crew waited until round 14 to take their first QB, 2019's QB18 Philip Rivers.  Rivers finished 2019 behind the likes of undrafted QB's Jared Goff, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kirk Cousins, and even Ryan Fitzpatrick.  He is a soon-to-be 39 year old coming off a 23:20 TD-INT season on a new team with a weaker skill position group.  My money is on him being replaced by Ben Roethlisberger or another FA QB with higher upside by week 3.

Best RB Situation - Team Sean

As previously mentioned, Team Sean Drafted three of the top eleven RB's from 2019 in Saquon Barkley, Austin Ekeler and Chris Carson.  His team is topped off by probable starters Kerryon Johnson and Matt Breida, giving him five solid week-to-week options.  If Team Sean's top three options put up even 75% the points they did in 2019, he will have three top-20 RB's when all is said and done.

Worst RB Situation - Brett's Nasty Bunch

This comes with an asterisk, as rookie RB's are extremely unpredictable.  However, as depth charts currently stand, the Nasties don't have a single 1A RB on their squad.  Jonathan Taylor is slotted to split carries with Marlon Mack initially, and JK Dobbins is the clear 1B to Mark Ingram's 1A to start the 2020 season.  The Nasties also drafted Philip Lindsay, who is slated for work behind newly acquired Melvin Gordon, and AJ Dillon, who could find himself a distant third on the depth chart behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.

Best WR Situation - Its all about the W

The W wins this award by default, taking DeAndre Hopkins and Tyreek Hill with their first and second round picks.  That is a lethal one-two punch in a two WR league.  However, he didn't get much in terms of depth, taking Emmanuel Sanders, Henry Ruggs and N'Keal Harry later in the draft.  Those three make viable replacement-level starters for bye weeks, but would be iffy multi-week replacements in the event of an injury to Hopkins or Hill.  A fun fact - Hopkins and Hill finished WR1 and WR2 in 2018 when neither missed time with an injury.  Food for thought.

Worst WR Situation - Kevin

Focused on drafting three straight RB's, Kevin waited on WR and took DK Metcalf and Tyler Boyd.  Both are borderline WR2/3, especially Boyd playing with a rookie QB after finishing 2019 as WR23.  There isn't much depth after those two, with rookie CeeDee Lamb, Golden Tate, and Justin Jefferson rounding out the squad.  All are the fourth or fifth options in their respective passing offenses, but could make for sneaky successful bye week fill-ins.

Best TE Situation - Chopkins

Team Chopkins wins by default by reaching for Travis Kelce in the middle of round two, despite significantly higher scoring options like Aaron Jones, Julio Jones and Austin Ekeler being available.  I guess we could chalk it up to a strategy by taking Mahomes first and following it up with Kelce.

Worst TE Situation - Football Fetish

Noah Fant is more of a bye week fill-in than an every week starter, finishing 2019 as TE16.  Fant has a question mark at QB in Drew Lock and is surrounded by superior receiving options on the Broncos.  Selecting Fant wasn't a bad pick, but someone had to lose this category.

Most Talented Team - BluhmGoesTheDynamite

There are three or four teams that could have taken this spot, but purely based on 2019 results BGTD takes the accolade.  The team boasts last year's RB2 and RB5 as well as WR6, WR15 and WR17.  Darren Waller finished last year as TE3, and Josh Allen is a much better fantasy QB than real life QB.  The only thing BGTD lacks is RB depth, but the team's starting lineup looks like one that will be competing for a championship in 2020.
