The 2024 KPAFFL Season Recap

The 2024 KPAFFL season is now a wrap and it was a wild one in year 22 of the league.  Team Kevin took home the championship in a nail-biter against Team Sean, pulling out the victory with big games from three different Lions players on MNF.  The almost 37 points Joe Burrow put up for Team Kevin proved to be too much for Team Sean to overcome, and another top-5 RB performance from Jahmyr Gibbs sealed the deal on the 22nd KPAFFL Championship.  This was Team Kevin's third overall championship win and first since 2011.  You can see below the all-time records for all teams in the KPAFFL with up to date winning percentages, playoff appearances, and league records through 22 years of play.

The 2024 All-Fantasy Team of positional points leaders finished with some surprises this year, but in terms of their ADP many weren't too far off from the top of the rankings:

QB - Lamar Jackson
RB1 - Saquon Barkley
RB2 - Derrick Henry
WR1 - Ja'Marr Chase
WR2 - Justin Jefferson
TE1 - George Kittle
FLEX - Jahmyr Gibbs
D/ST - Denver Broncos

Amazingly, none of the top scorers at each position were the first taken at their position in the 2024 draft.  That leads us to some accolades as we reflect on the draft that made or broke the season for many of the teams in the KPAFFL.

Best High Draft Pick - Team Sean with Saquon Barkley

Barkley ran for over 2000 yards and led all running backs in points in 2024, and Team Sean was able to take him with pick 8 of the first round, after McCaffery, Breece Hall, and Bijan were off the board.  Sean was able to form the most fearsome RB duo with Barkley and Henry which propelled him all the way to the championship this year.  Also under consideration was Wasted Talent's selection of Ja'Marr Chase with the first pick of the second round.  He merely fell because of holdout rumors, but that didn't stop Wasted Talent from pairing him with AJ Brown at the beginning of the draft.

Worst High Draft Pick - Football Fetish with Breece Hall

It was a weird year in terms of ADP for Breece Hall, as he went off the board at the top of many drafts but I never saw the allure.  Hall finished as RB18 this season and despite some dynamic games early in the season, he had just as many dud games to go along with them.  It is even more agonizing that RB4 Bijan Robinson went off the board with the next pick, but it just goes to show you that ADP ain't shit sometimes.  Team Tyler's first overall pick of Christian McCaffery was also considered, but he was a consensus top pick and Kyle Shannahan lied about just how injured he was, throwing fantasy managers across the country into dissarray.

Best Low Draft Pick - Team Tyler with Bucky Irving

As with most years in the KPAFFL, running backs fly off the board in the early rounds and managers are left picking up scraps by round ten.  Landing the overall RB16 in round 13 was a huge steal for Team Tyler and helped offset the loss of McCaffery throughout the season.  Irving will surely be taken in the top four rounds in 2025 after rushing for a rookie-high 1033 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Also in consideration was Pfunk's selection of Jayden Daniels in round 13 who finished as the QB4 despite being Pfunk's second QB selection of the draft.

Worst Low Draft Pick - Pfunk with Ja'lyn Polk

It wasn't a complete loss of a pick since it came in round 11, but Polk turned out to be one of the easiest players to drop in the entire KPAFFL draft.  He finished with 12 receptions for 87 yards on the season and was droppable somewhere in the first two weeks.  True, in the latter rounds you are looking for some long-shot players to pay off, but no one in the awful Patriots offense is worth rostering in the modern NFL landscape.

Best Free Agent Pickup - Team Sean with Adam Thielen

Thielen was dropped early because of a lack of performance and injuries that kept him out the bulk of the season.  Team Sean picked him up at the end of October and he went on a run for the ages to help lead Team Sean to the playoffs.  Thielen put up 25.5 points for Team Sean in the championship with his two TD game and was Team Sean's highest scorer of the week.  Best of all, Team Sean picked him up for free and didn't have to waste any FAAB money on him.

Worst Free Agent Pickup - Team Kevin with the Colts

It didn't make a difference in the end, but boy oh boy what if it had?  Kevin blew most of his wad on the Colts defense going into the championship, spending $67 to get a grand total of -3 points from his starting defense.  It didn't look awful at the time, because who would have predicted the Giants to put up almost 50 points on the Colts?  But getting -3 points out of your D/ST in the championship was very dangerous and lucky that it didn't cost him the victory.

Before I sign off for the season and start preparing for 2025, I leave you with some fun facts related to the season and the overall state of the league after 22 successful years.  Congrats to everyone for finishing the year strong and good luck with your future endeavors!

Fun Facts

Football Fetish has finished dead last 3 of the last 4 years, with an 11th place mixed in as well.  The season before that four year streak started he won the championship, but alas remains at the bottom of the league with a career .340 winning percentage.

There hasn't been a repeat champion in the KPAFFL for the last five years, the longest such streak in the league's history.  Only Holmes Crew remains without a single championship after 22 years of play.

Team Kevin's third championship ties him in second with Pfunk for the most championships won all time in the KPAFFL.  Only Brett's Nasty Bunch has more with four, two of which coming in the last six years.
