PLAYOFFS?!

Packers WR Randall Cobb has 892 yards receiving and 7 TD's this season.
Week 1 of the playoffs has concluded, and the final two championship contenders are no surprise.  Brett's Nasty Bunch stayed in the hunt wire-to-wire, and despite two straight season opening losses, team pfunk never strayed from playoff contention.  The two heavyweights will square off on Sunday, and with no players in the Sunday night game, the title should be decided by 7pm EST.
Both teams looked competitive immediately post draft, but lets look back at the surprises that led to the 1 vs 2 championship matchup:

  • Brett's Nasty Bunch
    • Robert Griffin III - There was no doubt the kid had talent, but solidifying himself as a top 5 QB in his rookie season was certainly one of the biggest surprises of the 2012 season.  With 228.84 fantasy points, Griffin is tops among all QB's in the league, thanks to his dual-threat ability.  Rushing for 748 yards through 14 games, one of which he sat out, Griffin has more yards on the ground then the likes of Michael Turner, Darren McFadden, Ryan Mathews, DeMarco Murray, and Fred Jackson, to name a few.  His 6 rushing touchdowns is tied for 13th among all RUNNING BACKS in the NFL, numbers that resemble a young Mike Vick.  Griffin is a lock for Offensive Rookie of the Year, and is poised to be a statistical monster for years to come.
    • Randall Cobb - Tied for 12th in touchdown receptions among NFL WR's, Cobb emerged as Aaron Rodgers new go-to receiver in the pass-heavy Packers offense.  Cobb was buried on the depth chart behind Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones, and Donald Driver in 2011, but seized the opportunity to start when injuries plagued the Packers WR corps in 2012.  Targeted a team high 99 times through 14 games, Cobb is a legitimate 3-way threat.  His 10 rushes for 132 yards equals a team high 13.2 yards per carry, and he returned a combined 66 punts and kickoffs for 1217 yards and a touchdown.  Cobb's emergence should alleviate the Packers need to resign Greg Jennings this off-season, and along with Jordy Nelson, the duo will remain one of the league's most dominant pass-catching tandems.
    • Trent Richardson - Richardson's 897 yards on the ground rank 16th in the NFL, but the rookie is often a second thought due to the emergence of fellow rookies Doug Martin and Alfred Morris.  However, Richardson's 11 rushing touchdowns is tied for second in the NFL, behind only Arian Foster.  Despite being plagued by minor injuries and just three 100 yard rushing games, Richardson has an uncanny nose for the end zone.  His five touchdowns in three December games helped propel the Nasty Bunch into the ship, and his performance against Denver this week could ultimately determine the championship outcome.
    • Eric Decker - Both Decker and Demaryius Thomas benefited greatly from the arrival of Peyton Manning, and Decker's 2012 statistics have flourished.  In his first two NFL seasons, Decker had a combined 50 receptions for 718 and 9 touchdowns.  Through 14 games in 2012, Decker has 72 receptions for 923 yards and 9 touchdowns, surpassing his career TOTALS in less than a full season.  His 109 targets were more than the likes of Marques Colston, Miles Austin, Michael Crabtree, and Jeremy Maclin.  Just 25 years young, Decker is poised to put up big numbers with Manning under center for the next few seasons, especially with defenses drawn to the speedier Demaryius Thomas.
  • PFunk
    • Brandon Marshall - His talent was never deniable, but keeping the diva WR happy always took precedence over his on-field performance.  The 2012 season has further solidified Marshall as one of the best in the game, especially with no other viable options in the weak Bears offense.  Marshall is second in the NFL with 1398 yards receiving through 14 games, and his 10 TD's are second to only A.J. Green.  He is the only consistent performer on Chicago's roster, but will certainly need a partner in crime if he wants to duplicate his performance next year.  Marshall has been targeted 164 times, third most in the NFL.  That number is also 107 MORE TARGETS then Matt Forte's 57 targets, which is second on the Bears.  Marshall's numbers may be bloated because of his overuse, but luckily that has no ill-effect in fantasy football, where he remains a top five WR across the board.
    • BenJarvus Green-Ellis - In his first season with the Bengals, Green-Ellis continued where he left off with New England.  He has rushed for 1080 yards and 6 TD's through 14 games, and added 21 receptions for the Bengals as well.  Although his touchdown numbers have taken a big hit since leaving the offensive juggernaut Patriots, Green-Ellis has put up average to above average fantasy numbers in all but one game this season.  He has benefited from being one of the few NFL running backs not forced to share carries, and in turn put up five straight 10+ fantasy points performances to date.
    • Jermaine Gresham - Second-tier tight ends are often lost in the mix during fantasy drafts, but Jermaine Gresham has performed like a top ten in 2012.  He ranks 8th among NFL TE's with 699 yards receiving, and his 5 TD's equal the output of top tight ends like Vernon Davis, Antonio Gates, Greg Olson, and Aaron Hernandez.  His 97.90 fantasy points through 14 games are tenth best in the NFL at his position, but his week 16 performance may be a make or break situation for team PFunk.  The Bengals face a Steelers team that has allowed Gresham just 12 catches for 90 yards in four career matchups.  Although Pittsburgh's defense is slumping, Gresham will have to find a way to break out against the division rival if he is to put up legitimate numbers this week.
Here is a look at the first round playoff matchups and results.  This week, team chopkins and Boulter will face off in the 3rd place game, Wasted Talent and Manifest Destiny will play for 5th, and Holmes Crew and Bluhm Goes the Dynamite square off in the coveted Toilet Bowl for 7th place.
